Dryer Not Heating — Troubleshooting Guide

Fix a dryer that runs but doesn't heat. Check the lint trap, vent, thermal fuse, and heating element.

Time Estimate

⏱️ 30 minutes - 1 hour

DIY Cost

💰 $20-100 DIY / $150-350 repair

Tools Needed

🧰 Screwdriver, Multimeter, Vacuum

The dryer runs, the drum spins, but clothes come out damp. If there’s no heat, here’s where to look.

Check #1: Lint Trap and Vent (Do This First)

A clogged vent is the #1 cause of dryers not heating — and a fire hazard.

Check the lint trap: Clean it before every load. If it’s coated, air can’t flow.

Check the vent:

  1. Go outside and find the vent hood
  2. Run the dryer and feel for strong airflow
  3. Weak airflow = clogged vent

The Fix:

  • Disconnect the vent hose from the back of the dryer
  • Vacuum the hose and the duct to the outside
  • Use a vent brush for long runs
  • Remove any lint buildup at the exterior hood

Time: 30 minutes. Cost: $20-30 for a vent brush kit.

Do this annually to prevent fires and maintain heating.

Check #2: Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse blows when the dryer overheats (usually from poor venting). Once blown, no heat.

Location: Usually on the exhaust duct or blower housing inside the dryer.

Test: Use a multimeter to check continuity. No continuity = blown fuse.

The Fix: Replace the fuse ($10-25). But also fix the underlying cause (usually the clogged vent) or it will blow again.

Check #3: Heating Element (Electric Dryers)

Electric dryers use a coil to generate heat. It can break over time.

Signs:

  • No heat at all
  • Element visibly broken when inspected

Test: Check continuity with a multimeter.

The Fix: Element replacement ($30-100 part). Moderate DIY — requires opening the dryer cabinet.

Check #4: Gas Igniter (Gas Dryers)

Gas dryers use an igniter to light the gas. If it fails, no flame, no heat.

Signs:

  • You hear the gas valve click but no heat
  • Burner doesn’t glow/ignite

The Fix: Igniter replacement ($40-80). Because it involves gas, many prefer professional service.

Check #5: Flame Sensor/Gas Valve Coils (Gas Dryers)

The flame sensor and gas valve coils work together to control gas flow. These can fail intermittently — dryer heats sometimes but not others.

Fix: Coil set replacement ($20-40). Professional recommended due to gas.

When to Call a Pro

  • Gas dryer issues (safety)
  • You’re not comfortable with electrical testing
  • Problem persists after checking vent and fuse
  • Unusual sounds or burning smells

Cost: $150-350 for most heating repairs.

The Bottom Line

Clean the vent first — it’s the most common cause and a safety issue. Check the thermal fuse second. Beyond that, you’re looking at element or gas system repairs, which are moderate DIY or a service call.
